Luiz Chavez Family

Home Project #1: Luiz Chavez Family

Location: Puerto Viejo- Sarapiqui

Description:  When we showed up to visit with Luiz and family, he was carrying a weedwhacker, a bike, and another tool in ankle-deep mud in the rain.   His family calls him El Castor, or the beaver, because he is always working, and because he has taught himself how to carve wood into furniture.  He is using his woodworking skills to pay the bills when landscaping work is sparse.  His wife’s name is Eugenia Martínez, His kids names are: Ana María 16 years old, Maryelin 14 years old , Donovan 9 years old, Isaac 7 years old, Dixi 4 years old, David 2 years old.   They live in a two room home they rent with poor drainage and roofing.  Luiz feels that a home will allow him to take better care of his family and know that they are safe when he is away.

Update: As of April 2015, beautiful Luis and his wonderful family have moved into their new home! Big thanks to everyone involved, especially the student group from Billings, Montana. See before and after pictures below!
