Below are the details regarding the families that need a new home.
Home Project #1: Luiz Chavez Family
Location: Puerto Viejo- Sarapiqui
When we showed up to visit with Luiz and family, he was carrying a weedwhacker, a bike, and another tool in ankle-deep mud in the rain. His family calls him El Castor, or the beaver, because he is always working, and because he has taught himself how to carve wood into furniture. He is using his woodworking skills to pay the bills when landscaping work is sparse. His wife’s name is Eugenia Martínez, His kids names are: Ana María 16 years old, Maryelin 14 years old , Donovan 9 years old, Isaac 7 years old, Dixi 4 years old, David 2 years old. They live in a two room home they rent with poor drainage and roofing. Luiz feels that a home will allow him to take better care of his family and know that they are safe when he is away.

Home Project #2: Zeneida Altamirano Family
Location: Rio Frio, Finca Uno
Zeneida is a single mother of three children. Her husband left her years ago and they have been moved from house to house since then. She currently rents the home they are in now. The house doesn’t have plumbing, running water, and electricity. The children must walk at least two miles to get to the bus, and then it takes almost another hour to get to school. Zeneida works at a local sugar cane processing plant and makes just under $2 a day. She has four beautiful kids: Ingrid 14 years old, Josue 11 years old, and Magaly who is 8. The home floor is muddy, and there are no doors or windows to lock so her valuables are accessible to any thief in the area. She believes that a new home will not only provide security for her family, but also improve her children’s school-work and future.

Home Project #3: Kattia Arrieta Family
Location: Rio Frio, Costa Rica
Kattia is a single mother, her husband left her over 8 years ago. She has two children, Aron (9 years old) and one daughter Franciny (17 years old). Franciny is at the local environmental science high school, where Kattia is the lunch lady. Like many girls her age in Rio Frio, Franciny already has a child. Valentina, Franciny’s daughter, is an adorable two year old girl with downs syndrome. The family is living in an old restaurant. Their bedroom is the former storage closet. The roof is in bad condition, so when it rains, all of their belongings get soaked. Kattia makes $500 a month at the school, but that is not enough to cover the cost of raising her children, and Valentina’s medical bills. Like many bread-winners in the area, she has developed her own side business. She creates home furnishings and decor using recycled plastic and paper mache. Despite her difficult financial situation, she is quick with a smile, and generous with her artwork.
